Ohio Theater History
The Ohio Theatre regularly stages productions of all scales, from local plays to Broadway musicals. The staggering attention to detail - which features a 21 foot chandelier - and spectacular Spanish-Baroque architecture are evident of its position as the preeminent theatre in Ohio.

Thomas Lamb designed the theatre, a place he saw as 'a palace for the average man', and it opened in 1928 as a movie house with an organ and orchestra. Live stage shows travelled through the theatre with famous Vaudeville performers like Milton Berle and Ginger Rogers entertaining the Ohio public. It's thought at about a million dollars was spent on furnishings, a huge amount for the time.

Post-war it carried on as a movie theatre but the growth of suburbs drew attention away from downtown entertainment venues and it was set for demolition in 1969 before the Ohio public raised enough money for it to be saved. The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) was subsequently formed and it still runs the facility to this day.
