Composed as an expression of resistance against the Nazi regime that was occupying its namesake city at the time, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra herald's the new year with Shostakovich's 7th Symphony, the monumental and indelible Leningrad.
One of the repertoire's longest work, it is seen as a tribute to human triumph over fascism,a moving testament to those who lost their lives fighting for a better tomorrow. Premiering whilst the troops were still in occupation, it went on to become one of Shostakovich's most popular and influential pieces, both in Europe and and in the West.
