Requiem is one of Giuseppe Verdi most iconic pieces of music and was written honor of Alessandro Manzoni, a reknown Italian poet and novelist who passed away in 1873. Verdi could not bring himself to attend the funeral for his admired friend and artistic ally, instead creating a Requiem Mass in memory of Manzoni's life.
