East meets West with Columbus Symphony
Columbus Symphony performs three magnificent works at Ohio Theater taking in both East and West, with Aaron Copland's delectable folk dances Rodeo opening a program that continues with the wonderful Second Violin Concerto by Florence Price - the first ever African-American woman to be formally recognized as a symphonic composer - featuring the talents of violinist Melissa White. Following on from this, the orchestra performs Tchaikovsky's magnificent first symphony, known as the "Winter Daydreams" symphony.
Tchaikovsky's first significant work, Winter Daydreams is noted for its lyrical melodies and imaginative orchestration, reflecting the influence of Russian folk music and the composer's early Romantic style. The energetic, triumphant finale showcased his growing mastery of the symphonic form and his ability to infuse his music with vivid emotion and picturesque imagery.
